Bora Bora.
Bora Bora is an island in the Leeward group of the Society Islands of French Polynesia. The island is located about 230 kilometres northwest of Papeete and it is surrounded by a mystical lagoon and beautiful barrier reef. It has a population of under 10,000 people.
History of Bora Bora.
In ancient times the island was known as Vava'u, which supports the theory that the island was colonised by inhabitants from the Tongan island of the same name.
Bora Bora roughly translates to first born, indicating that this island may have been the most important island after Ra'iatea.
James Cook sighted Bora Bora in 1769 on his first voyage to the French Polynesia. The island was annexed in 1888.
During World War 2, a US supply base was established on the island. It was prompted by the bombing of Pearl Harbour in 1942. Also, during the war, 8 massive 7-inch naval cannons were installed around the island during war. All but one is still in place.
In 2001 a lagoon discoloured and coral was bleached as the result of El Nino. The water is once agin sparkling and magical but the damage of the coral is irreversible.
